Blender 5.3’s rendering notes are a big deal if you care about new scene types and node workflows. The standout is first-class 3D Gaussian Splat import and rendering — plus a wave of shader-node upgrades that make procedural setups less painful.

What’s new at a glance

Shader nodes

5.3 expands what shader graphs can express without hacks:

  • Recursive closures
  • Index Switch and Switch nodes
  • String nodes
  • Boolean Math and Integer Math
  • Warning node
  • Enable Output node

If you build complex material logic, these close gaps that used to force Geometry Nodes detours or messy workarounds.

3D Gaussian Splats (the headline)

Gaussian Splats reconstruct 3D scenes from photos/video as many soft, transparent “blobs” that approximate geometry and shading.

In Blender 5.3:

  • Import from **PLY** and **SPZ**
  • Represented as **Point Cloud** data-blocks with a new Type: Points vs 3D Gaussian Splats
  • Extra attributes: scale, rotation, radiance:base, spherical-harmonic bands (radiance:sh_*)
  • Geometry Nodes: Set Point Cloud Type, Import SPZ; Import PLY auto-detects splat files
  • Workbench, EEVEE, and Cycles can all render them
  • Default look is emissive; rudimentary relighting via hard BSDFs is possible

Limitations (from upstream): performance isn’t ideal yet; sRGB training assumptions; linear-space mismatch in low-opacity/high-radiance areas; Apply Transform doesn’t fully handle the new attributes. No export yet.

Why artists should care

  1. Photo-to-scene pipelines land inside Blender instead of living only in specialized viewers.
  2. Lookdev flexibility — same splat asset in Workbench / EEVEE / Cycles for different stages.
  3. Heavier renders — dense splat clouds + Cycles will melt laptops; this is classic farm territory.
  4. Node upgrades mean more of your shading can stay “one graph” when you ship to a farm.

Render farm tips for 5.3 splat scenes

  1. Match Blender 5.3 (or whatever the farm supports) exactly — splat support is version-sensitive.
  2. Pack carefully: splat PLY/SPZ + textures + relative paths.
  3. Do a single farm test frame before a full shot; splat performance varies a lot.
  4. Prefer farms that support Cycles and Eevee if you lookdev in Eevee and finish in Cycles.
  5. Watch transform/rigging limitations before you animate splat objects.
